Though the incumbent Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik is set to be re-elected as the association’s president unopposed today, it will be a tense day for the other-office bearers and Apex Council members till the final results are announced tonight.

Most of the aspiring candidates were busy on the eve of the election day on Tuesday, personally meeting or contacting MCA’s 375 voters via phone calls, canvassing for their candidature.

It’s a one-on-one contest for all the office-bearers posts, but all eyes will be on the battle for secretary’s post which will be contested by former secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar or ex-joint secretary Shahalam Shaikh.

Interestingly, when the Sharad Pawar-Ashish Shelar group issued a statement on Tuesday in support of their candidates, both Khanvilkar and Shahalam’s names were missing from it.

The Pawar-Shelar group’s statement supports candidates for four office-bearer posts, including the name of president Naik, nine Apex Council member posts and two Governing Council posts.

“Together, we stand united for the future of Mumbai Cricket — committed to transparency, development and the continued glory of our cricketing legacy,” read the statement.
