Aaron George’s elegant century, combined with explosive half-centuries from IPL stars Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, propelled India into the ICC U-19 World Cup final with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan on Wednesday. India is set to face England in the title match on Friday, marking their 10th appearance in the U-19 World Cup final—a testament to the BCCI’s robust junior cricket development program that consistently uncovers remarkable talent.

Afghanistan presented a formidable challenge, setting a lofty target of 310-4, anchored by impressive centuries from Faisal Shinozada (110) and Uzairullah Niazal (101).

However, India cruised past the challenging target in just 41.1 overs, marking their highest-ever successful chase in U-19 World Cup history. Aaron George led the charge with a masterful 115 off 104 balls, showcasing impeccable timing and placement.

Support came from Sooryavanshi, who scored a blistering 68 off only 33 balls, and Mhatre, who contributed a steady 62 off 59. Together, they maintained a run rate exceeding seven throughout the innings. “I felt in great form, and the trust from the team management was crucial. I’m pleased I followed the process and believed in my abilities. Everyone stepped up, and it’s fantastic to see our top order firing on all cylinders. We’re excited for the final,” expressed George.

Sooryavanshi, known for his aggressive batting, gave India a flying start, striking a series of boundaries, particularly against off-spinner Wahidullah Zadran. He was fortunate to survive an early scare when Niazal dropped a catch at point when he was on 22. Despite that, Sooryavanshi played aggressively, including a spectacular helicopter shot for six off pacer Nooristani Omarzai. The opening partnership yielded 93 runs before Aaron teamed up with Mhatre to add a swift 114 runs in just over 17 overs, pushing India past the 200-run mark by the 27th over.

Earlier, Afghanistan’s Shinozada and Niazai set the stage with their remarkable centuries. Shinozada led with a score of 110 off 93 balls, while Niazai’s unbeaten 101 came off 86 deliveries, leaving Indian bowlers struggling to claim wickets consistently.
