In the Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup 2026, South Africa secured a convincing nine-wicket victory against the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Captain Aiden Markram led from the front with an impressive unbeaten 82 runs off just 46 balls, featuring seven fours and four sixes.

After the match, Markram shared his thoughts on the Ahmedabad pitch, describing it as “tacky” and “stopy.” He praised his team’s bowling performance, stating, “I thought we bowled quite nicely. A team like West Indies will always challenge you. The pitch had some tackiness and was a bit stopy. With the early movement, we aimed to keep the ball up. The steep bounce resulted from the tackiness. Luckily, we ended up winning the toss.”

Looking ahead, Markram expressed optimism about advancing to the semifinals of the tournament, noting, “No stage in this competition is easy. Hopefully, we can make it through to the semifinals. It’s essential to stay grounded and not think too far ahead, but the boys are adapting well to the conditions here.”

Markram also achieved a personal milestone by surpassing JP Duminy to become South Africa’s fourth-highest run-scorer in T20 internationals. With a total of 1,944 runs from 75 matches, he boasts an average of 32.40 and a strike rate of 148.73, including 14 fifties and a top score of 86 not out. In comparison, Duminy accumulated 1,934 runs in 81 matches at an average of 38.68.

In addition to Markram’s stellar performance, veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock contributed significantly with 47 runs off 24 deliveries, also hitting four fours and four sixes. Ryan Rickelton chipped in with an unbeaten 45 runs from 28 balls, which included four boundaries and two maximums. The Proteas successfully chased down the target of 177 runs, losing only one wicket in 16.1 overs.

With two victories under their belt, South Africa will next face Zimbabwe on March 1 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
