It’s time to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Mumbai’s cricket legends! Among the elite players with over 100 Test matches, only Sachin Tendulkar has been formally recognized, receiving a dedicated 20-seat enclosure at the Garware Pavilion. As we recently commemorated the 50th anniversary of Dilip Vengsarkar’s Test debut on January 24, 1976, it’s an opportune moment to discuss how the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honors its icons. In 2021, the MCA celebrated Sunil Gavaskar with a special AC box to mark his extensive career, and many believe it’s high time Vengsarkar received similar recognition. Currently, Sachin Tendulkar stands alone among 100-Test players as the sole honoree, while Ravi Shastri, with his impressive 230 international appearances, narrowly misses the threshold by just 20 Tests. His contributions, however, are monumental—being part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, claiming the title of “Champion of Champions” in 1985, and making history as the first Indian to hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket. His tenure as head coach also saw India achieve notable series victories in Australia. Perhaps a dedicated stand in his name would be a fitting tribute. Additionally, stalwarts like Ramakant Desai, Dilip Sardesai, and Eknath Solkar deserve their moment in the spotlight at Wankhede, alongside Ajinkya Rahane, who has made significant contributions with his 85 Tests and leadership during India’s historic series win in Australia. If the MCA considers honoring players associated with multiple state teams, Zaheer Khan, with 92 Tests, stands out as a prime candidate. Beyond these celebrations, it’s essential to contemplate whether there is sufficient space for further recognition. With limited resources, establishing a clear policy for honors, such as AC boxes and statues, will ensure that tributes remain meaningful and sustainable. While honoring cricket legends is crucial, it’s equally important to plan for the future, striking a balance between tribute and practicality. Jagdish Achrekar served as the MCA’s Treasurer before the 2022 elections. The views shared in this column reflect the author’s perspective and do not necessarily represent those of the publication.
