In the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, Team India faced a significant setback, losing to South Africa by 76 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In this match, Ishan Kishan, who had been in excellent form, was dismissed for a duck after just four balls. His opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, managed to score only 15 runs off 12 balls, hitting two boundaries and a six.

Given the early dismissals, former cricketer Abhishek Nayar believes that a crucial conversation is on the horizon for Ishan and Abhishek regarding who will take the strike in the upcoming matches. “It’s going to be an uneasy discussion between Ishan Kishan and Abhishek about who takes the strike next. Suddenly, the pressure shifts to Ishan, who was performing well, but now faces this challenge. This is a real concern for India,” he commented.

Team India’s next match is against Zimbabwe. Following that, they will take on the West Indies on March 1. Ahead of the encounter with the West Indies, Nayar pointed out that Roston Chase is likely to bowl during the powerplay, and the Indian batsmen need to devise strategies to tackle him. “There will definitely be talks on how to handle an off-spinner like Chase, especially since he’ll be bowling in the powerplay. They’ll need to return with improved tactics. A finger spinner can get extra bounce when the ball hits the seam, which can be tricky. Even slight deviations can lead to wickets in T20 cricket, creating doubt in the batsmen’s minds,” the 42-year-old former player explained.

The 76-run loss against South Africa has made Team India’s path to the semi-finals more complicated. To keep their hopes alive for defending the T20 World Cup title, the “Men in Blue” must secure victories in their remaining two matches while also focusing on improving their net run rate.

The match against Zimbabwe is set to take place on February 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
