In the Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 against Zimbabwe, India’s dynamic opener Abhishek Sharma showcased his talent by scoring 55 runs off just 30 balls, including four boundaries and four sixes. This marked his first half-century of the tournament. Post-match, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar praised Sharma for his performance, remarking that the left-hander had effectively silenced his critics.

“We all know Abhishek Sharma’s capabilities as a batsman. His 55-run innings against Zimbabwe speaks volumes,” Gavaskar stated. However, he expressed surprise at Sharma’s use of defensive shots during his innings.

“He took his time to settle in. There was a clear strategy behind his approach. He respected the off-spinner, avoided unnecessary risks, and played with composure. It was unexpected to see him defend the ball like that, as it’s not typical for him,” Gavaskar noted.

Sharma had faced challenges earlier in the tournament, registering three ducks in the initial matches. Gavaskar believes this experience will serve as a valuable lesson for the young batsman.

“This is definitely a learning phase for him. Every cricketer encounters slumps in form. What matters is the lessons learned during those tough times. I believe Abhishek has gained significant insights that will benefit him in the upcoming matches, especially the crucial encounter against West Indies in Kolkata,” the 76-year-old former player commented.

The Indian team is set to face the West Indies on March 1 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
