In the inaugural ODI against New Zealand, Team India clinched a thrilling victory by four wickets at the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium in Kotambi. Wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul played a pivotal role in securing the win, scoring an unbeaten 29 runs off just 21 deliveries, including two boundaries and a six. He was well-supported by Harshit Rana, who contributed 29 runs from 23 balls, also hitting two boundaries and a six. Together, they forged a significant partnership of 37 runs.
Following the match, Rahul reflected on his experience batting alongside Harshit. He noted that he had to help calm the young player down, advising him against going for a big shot on every ball. “Batting with Harshit Rana in the closing overs was enjoyable. I had to keep reminding him not to try and hit a six with every delivery, as that was his instinct. I needed to help him settle in since he’s new to ODIs and hasn’t played many matches yet,” Rahul shared on JioHotstar.
Rahul praised Harshit as a valuable asset for any team. “We’ve all witnessed his potential. He performed well in Australia and has played vital innings for the squad. The dressing room recognizes his talent and is eager for him to evolve into a top-class cricketer, the kind every team desires,” he added.
The 33-year-old cricketer also acknowledged that sometimes Harshit can be overly confident, but he considered it a positive trait. Rahul elaborated on their strategy during the run chase of 301 runs against the Black Caps. “He’s tall, bowls at 145 kph with excellent variations, and can bat effectively too. His attitude is commendable. While he may be a touch overconfident, I prefer that over a lack of confidence. After he hit a few boundaries, I reassured him that we weren’t chasing too much. Our goal was to target one boundary per over, take one calculated risk, and then get me back on strike,” he explained.
The next ODI match between Team India and New Zealand is set to take place on January 14 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.
