In a significant turn of events, the Pakistani government has opted to lift its boycott call, influenced by discussions with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This decision resolves a standoff that had loomed over the tournament. The eagerly anticipated match against India is now set to take place in Colombo on February 15, 2026.
A press release from the Pakistani government stated, “In light of the fruitful outcomes of multilateral discussions and the appeals from our friendly nations, the Government of Pakistan instructs the National Cricket Team to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match on February 15.”
This shift was largely prompted by a statement from Aminul Islam, head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, who encouraged Pakistan to prioritize the integrity of the sport. “This decision is aimed at upholding the spirit of cricket and ensuring the continuity of this beloved global sport across all participating nations,” the government added.
Additionally, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a call from Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who urged a rethink of the boycott. “The Sri Lankan President requested that the Prime Minister seriously consider a peaceful resolution to the current situation,” the statement concluded.
