Sandeep Patil, the former chairman of selectors from the last time India hosted the T20 World Cup, expressed his confusion over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire from international T20 cricket while still participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). “It’s perplexing to me. Here we have two cricketing legends stepping away from the T20 format, yet they’re available for the IPL. I just can’t wrap my head around it. They could have continued playing T20 for India alongside the IPL, and that would have been something we all would have welcomed,” Patil shared during a recent discussion at a Cricket, Cocktails, and Controversy event hosted by journalist Ayaz Memon at The Indus Club in BKC. Patil’s comments regarding Kohli and Rohit came up after he was questioned about Shubman Gill’s absence from the World Cup squad. He expressed sympathy for Gill but defended the selection choices made by Ajit Agarkar’s committee. “It’s unfortunate for Gill, but he simply doesn’t fit into this team. Who would you replace? When we discuss selections, we often focus solely on individual players, but we must also consider team combinations,” Patil stated.
