In the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match against Zimbabwe, Team India secured a solid victory, winning by 72 runs at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. A significant shift in strategy saw Sanju Samson included in the lineup, opening the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, while Ishan Kishan was moved down to the third spot.
Samson contributed a quick 24 runs off 15 balls, including a boundary and two sixes, while Abhishek impressed with 55 runs from just 30 balls, featuring four fours and four sixes.
Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar shared insights on how Samson’s inclusion positively impacted Team India. He praised the left-right batting combination at the top, stating, “India’s approach was spot on right from the beginning. The left-right combo was crucial, especially against a bowler like Sikandar Raza. Had there been two left-handers, Raza would have exploited the conditions early on, which could have posed challenges for India.”
Manjrekar noted that Samson’s presence disrupted Raza’s plans and delayed the introduction of offspinners. He explained, “The left-right dynamic worked wonderfully for the ‘Men in Blue.’ While the spinners did come in later, the initial combination kept India’s momentum going.”
Looking ahead, Team India is set to face the West Indies on March 1 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, with the tournament final scheduled for March 8, although the venue is still to be confirmed.
