As the T20 World Cup 2026 approaches, former cricketer Varun Aaron has shared insights on Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav’s recent struggles in T20 cricket. Speaking on ‘Game Plan’ for JioStar, Aaron pointed out that Suryakumar has frequently lost his wickets during the power play phase. He observed that the right-handed batsman tends to attempt his lap shot too soon in matches. “He seems to be playing his lap shot too early, trying to hit the ball from outside off-stump to the leg side prematurely. If you analyze his dismissals over the past year, especially in India, his performance has not been up to par due to slower pitch conditions,” remarked the former fast bowler. Aaron highlighted that a significant portion of Suryakumar’s dismissals in the power play—four out of eight—have come from pace-off deliveries, a recurring issue in his career. He believes that Suryakumar would thrive batting at number four, similar to his role with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. “The debate is whether he should bat at three or four, but I personally prefer him at four. The common denominator in his successful innings is that he plays the ball on its merits,” he concluded. The ‘Men in Blue’, led by Suryakumar Yadav, are set to face New Zealand in a five-match T20I series, with the first match scheduled for Wednesday at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.
