On Tuesday, Zimbabwe secured their spot in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup after their pivotal Group B clash with Ireland was unfortunately washed out due to rain. This result also meant the exit of former champions Australia and Ireland from the tournament. Both Zimbabwe and Ireland were awarded one point each, allowing Zimbabwe to accumulate five points, enough to qualify for the Super 8s.

Their first match in this next stage will be against India on February 26 in Chennai. With this achievement, Zimbabwe becomes the seventh team to advance to the Super 8s, joining a competitive group that includes India, South Africa, and the West Indies.

Before that, Zimbabwe will conclude their group stage with a match against co-hosts Sri Lanka on February 19. Sri Lanka, having already qualified for the Super 8s with six points, made the upcoming match crucial for both Zimbabwe and Ireland, who entered the game with four and two points, respectively.

Australia found themselves on two points after suffering losses to both Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. For them to stay in contention, they needed Zimbabwe to lose both of their remaining matches. However, the relentless rain dashed their hopes.

The match at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium faced a delayed start due to light drizzle, which kept the ground covered for a significant time. Ultimately, continuous rainfall and a soggy outfield resulted in no play, confirming Zimbabwe’s advancement to the Super 8 stage.
