In a groundbreaking move, the Mumbai Police have resolved a perplexing shooting incident in Lokhandwala through the innovative use of artificial intelligence, resulting in the arrest of actor and filmmaker Kamaal Rashid Khan, known as KRK. The case initially stumped investigators due to a lack of eyewitnesses, CCTV footage, and any audible gunshots reported by residents.
The alarming incident surfaced on January 18, when residents of Nalanda Society discovered bullet marks in two distinct apartments—one belonging to writer Neeraj Mishra and the other to model Prateek Baid. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the mysterious damage triggered widespread concern among the community, leading to an urgent police investigation.
With traditional investigative techniques failing to yield results, the Oshiwara police opted for advanced AI-driven forensic reconstruction. By analyzing the precise impact points of the bullets alongside environmental data and spatial mapping, investigators digitally simulated the trajectory of the shots. This AI model enabled them to ascertain the firing angle, distance, and direction, ultimately pinpointing the source of the bullets to a nearby bungalow owned by KRK.
Subsequent forensic examinations confirmed that the bullets were fired from a licensed 7.65 mm Mauser pistol registered to KRK. During questioning, the actor acknowledged that the shots originated from his firearm, but insisted the incident was accidental. He explained that the weapon discharged while he was inspecting it due to a jam, causing the bullets to inadvertently strike the residential complex.
Police officials emphasized that the application of artificial intelligence was vital in cracking the case, particularly given the absence of physical evidence like video surveillance or eyewitness accounts. The digital reconstruction process allowed investigators to accurately reconstruct the series of events, bolstering the case against the accused.
KRK has since been arrested and placed in custody as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances of the shooting. Investigators are examining whether proper firearm safety protocols were adhered to, and if negligence factored into the incident. Charges related to negligent discharge and endangerment of public safety are under consideration.
This case marks a significant milestone in the integration of technology within policing in Mumbai. Law enforcement officials believe the successful implementation of AI in this investigation could open doors to broader applications of digital tools in tackling complex cases, particularly those that lack conventional forms of evidence.
