Veteran actor-comedian Govardhan Asrani passed away on Monday, sparking a wave of grief across the film industry. A veteran of over 300 films spanning five decades, Asrani delivered iconic performances in Sholay, Namak Haraam, and Guddi, and was widely loved for his impeccable comic timing. The actor was laid to rest on Monday night in a quiet farewell attended only by family members. Reportedly, his manager shared that Asrani had wished for a private funeral away from the spotlight.

Asrani’s last rites were held at the Santacruz crematorium at 8 p.m., in the presence of close family and friends. His manager, Babubhai Thiba, said, “We did not inform anyone about his demise as it was his wish that we should keep it a private thing.” The family respected his final wish and conducted the funeral privately.
He is survived by his wife, Manju Asrani, his sister, and nephew. The couple had no children.
About Asrani
Born on January 1, 1940, in Jaipur, Asrani grew up in a middle-class Sindhi family. His father ran a carpet business, but young Govardhan was drawn to the performing arts. He studied at St. Xavier’s School and later graduated from Rajasthan College, supporting himself by working as a voice artist.
His passion for acting led him to train under Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar between 1960 and 1962 before joining the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, in 1964 — a decision that shaped his destiny.
Asrani made his film debut in 1967 with Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan and later worked in Gujarati cinema before gaining recognition in Hindi films. Over the years, he appeared in more than 350 films, excelling in both serious and comic roles. His performances in Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, Rafoo Chakkar, Bawarchi, Koshish, and Mere Apne remain timeless classics.
Asrani`s upcoming films
Even after his passing, fans will get to see Asrani in two upcoming films — Bhooth Bangla and Haiwaan — scheduled for release in 2026. Both films are directed by Priyadarshan, with Akshay Kumar, who has collaborated with Asrani on several hits, confirming the news on social media.
