Daboo Malik is a proud father to Amaal and Armaan Malik, who carved a niche for themselves in the field of music with sheer hard work. In an exclusive chat with mid-day, he expresses joy as Amaal’s single is out while Armaan hosted his first-ever concert in Mumbai. He also opens up about Amaal’s journey in the Bigg Boss 19 house.

Daboo Malik on Amaal’s song

Calling Kyun Mujhse Door Tha a heartfelt, emotional, and love-filled song, the veteran singer stated, “Amaal has a very high emotional quotient. He feels deeply and reacts to everything around him, often creating music from the stories that play in his mind. That`s why people these days think he is looking out for someone, and it has become national news. But that`s the character he is, and so he makes some brilliant heartbreak songs.”

On Amaal’s depression

Daboo Malik lauds Amaal for being a son who completed his father’s journey while helping his brother Armaan also reach that pinnacle. He shares, “Through every part of his journey, we have stood by him. But the truth is, he has fought his battles on his own. He is a self-made man. His story is his own, and he has built his music with his hard work and dedication.”

He adds, “My children can never be called nepo kids. My brother made it big, and though I was around, I did not reach that level. But my kids went on to carve a niche for themselves through their own talent and effort.”

When asked about Amaal’s depression post, the singer admits, “We started focusing on Armaan and forgot that our elder son is still a kid. So maybe he began to feel sidelined or ignored, which was never the case. We were just confident that he was old enough to handle things, but we didn’t realize how much was going on in his mind. Once we understood, we worked together to address it and sorted things out. If something is in his heart, he will speak up because he is opinionated, and that is why we had to face these moments.”

Talking about how Amaal is being judged and hated for his language and gameplay, his father says, “It`s acceptable because you cannot forget the kind of words and aggressions that have happened. So people will definitely have opinions, and you have to accept. He has to accept that if he makes mistakes, he will also have to face the wrath. When the good comes out, the bad will too — that’s part of life. Many people are praising him for being real and for standing up for the right things. I feel we shouldn’t take this too seriously.”

Commenting about his fight with Farrhana, he asserts, “I don’t look at it from a very serious point of view. All the contestants are simply playing the game in the way they think is best for them, and I think that’s wonderful. I don’t want to criticise anyone, and I don’t feel negative about anyone. In the larger scheme of things, I’m actually enjoying the space they are in. I’m enjoying the fights and everything that’s happening because, at the end of the day, it’s a game they have to navigate on their own.”

He also sheds light on claims of Nehal accusing Amaal of touching her inappropriately and states, “These are all part of the game’s tactics and the way the show unfolds. Unless there is something positive, negative, or even some backlash, the dynamics of the show don’t move forward. It all depends on observations and reactions, where right and wrong will keep happening along the way.”

On a fun note, Daboo avers, “I feel Amaal and Shehbaz can be starred together in a comedy film. I really felt bad when Baseer got evicted; he deserved to be in a better position.”

Daboo Malik on change in the music industry

The singer believes that today’s music is less poetic and is created using more relatable words, which the audience connects with. “There is nothing major happening in terms of independent music because a larger section of the audience is listening to music that is easy, simple, and relatable for youngsters.”

On a parting note, he also reflected on the use of AI in music and remarked, “People need to connect through singing and emotion; technology comes second. You cannot truly connect with listeners through autotune or AI. For example, today a Kishore Kumar song like Saiyaara has suddenly become popular — how do you explain that? It is the emotion in the music that touches people.”
