MTV, a popular channel that many young people turned to for entertainment, will soon be going off air. Known for its music and reality-based shows, the channel has long been a go-to destination for entertainment and updates on the latest music trends. Now, Paramount Global has officially announced that five of MTV’s remaining music channels — MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live — will shut down across the UK, Europe, and other international markets by December 31, 2025.

Raghu Ram reacts MTV shutdown

The news has surely left audiences emotional, and now actor Raghu Ram has reacted to it. He has had a long association with the channel as the host of the popular show Roadies.

Raghu took to his social media handle and posted a video where he said, “MTV is shutting down its music channels because viewership habits have changed — people have changed, the world has changed. Music is now being played in places other than MTV… It is a very sad thing because I belong to Gen X, which was also called the MTV generation. It was a very big thing for us. An era has ended today.”

The actor got emotional as he spoke about how deeply the channel influenced his life. “I was very, very into MTV in the 90s and early 2000s. In fact, MTV played a very big role in my life,” he said.

Raghu also addressed accusations of being responsible for MTV’s shift from music to reality shows. “Some even accuse me of being the reason MTV moved away from music. I don’t know how much truth there is in that. But you can see now — those who didn’t move internationally, those channels are shutting down. So MTV India, you’re welcome, I guess,” Raghu said.

About the MTV shutdown

Paramount Global, MTV`s parent company, announced that five of its music channels will shut down on December 31, 2025. The only channel that will remain on air is MTV HD, known for its reality shows and entertainment programming.

According to a report by Nielsen, in the US, MTV’s average prime-time audience of 256,000 people in 2023 was down from 807,000 in 2014. UK rating agency Barb reported that in July 2025, MTV Music only attracted 1.3 million viewers — a fraction of what it used to in the 1990s and 2000s.

The five channels that will stop broadcasting globally are:

MTV Music – the flagship destination for music videos

MTV 80s – retro hits and nostalgic favourites

MTV 90s – alternative rock and pop classics

Club MTV – dance music and electronic beats

MTV Live – live performances and concert coverage
