‘Don’t know where money’s coming from’

Producer Namit Malhotra, who is backing Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, recently dismissed concerns that soaring star fees are crippling Indian cinema, insisting they rise only when films lean entirely on actors rather than vision. “If you make 90 per cent of a film a star vehicle, then naturally they’ll take the bigger share,” he said on the Game Changers podcast. Namit also shared, “Part one is almost complete and I haven’t borrowed a rupee. Even I don’t know where the money’s coming from — it’s just happening.” Backed by his Oscar-winning VFX studio DNEG, the two-part epic stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, and Sunny Deol, with music by AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer.

Agra dekhe?

(L-R) Priyanka Bose and Mohit Agarwal in ‘Agra’

Filmmaker Kanu Behl’s Agra is set to arrive in cinemas across India on November 14. The film, co-written with Atika Chohan, probes sexual repression, cramped physical space, and patriarchy through the story of Guru, a frustrated young man trapped in a claustrophobic household. The film marks a comeback of the Aashiqui (1990) star Rahul Roy and features debutant actor Mohit Agarwal in the lead role along with Priyanka Bose. Agra has garnered praise on the festival circuit — the film premiered in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2023 and received a five-minute standing ovation. The movie also picked up awards at Jio Mumbai MAMI Film Festival, and Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, among others.
