Team India`s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the hospital in Sydney. Currently, the right-hander is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), as he suffered internal bleeding resulting from a rib cage injury, which he sustained during the third ODI match against Australia.

On Saturday, he had taken a brilliant catch running backwards from point to show Alex Carey the path to the pavilion. After completing his catch, the Indian appeared to have hurt his left rib cage in the process and was immediately rushed to the hospital after returning to the dressing room.

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately,” a source told PTI.

“He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding,” he added.

The BCCI medical team acted swiftly after Iyer`s vital parameters fluctuated upon his return to the dressing room.

“The team doctor and physio didn`t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He`s a tough lad and should be fine soon. Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it`s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source said.

Earlier, the right-hander was supposed to be out of action for approximately three weeks, but the recovery may now take a longer time. He is expected to remain in the Sydney hospital for at least a week before being declared fit to travel back to India.

The 30-year-old cricketer is not a part of India`s T20I squad for the Australia series. After concluding with the three-match ODI series, the “Men in Blue” will lock horns with Team India for the five-match T20I series.

The first T20I match between Team India and Australia is set to be played on October 29 at the Manuka Oval.
