In an intriguing revelation, choreographer and filmmaker Farah Khan discussed the last-minute decision to cast Malaika Arora in the legendary song Chaiyya Chaiyya from Mani Ratnam’s film Dil Se… During her appearance on the popular talk show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, Farah recounted that numerous actresses were approached before Malaika was finalized just days before the shoot. She mentioned having known Malaika prior to filming and expressed her urgency in bringing her on board, even without knowing her dance skills. “I wasn’t certain if she could dance, but her look was perfect for the song. She’s stunning,” Farah recalled. Ultimately, Mani Ratnam left the casting decision in her hands, saying, “Get anybody.” Farah later acknowledged Malaika’s exceptional performance in the Chaiyya Chaiyya sequence. This vibrant pop-folk song, which features lyrics inspired by Tere Ishq Nachaya by Bulleh Shah, showcases music by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Gulzar, brought to life with vocals by Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi. The iconic track, performed atop a moving train alongside Shah Rukh Khan, remains a highlight of Bollywood dance, thanks to Farah’s choreography. It continues to inspire dance enthusiasts across India. Dil Se… also starred Manisha Koirala and marked the debut of Preity Zinta. This film is the final entry in Ratnam’s trilogy, following Roja (1992) and Bombay (1995).
