Mumbai: A complaint raised by a senior citizen regarding food safety concerns at Punjabi Paneer’s Veena Nagar outlet in Mulund has resulted in swift action by authorities, with officials initiating an investigation within 24 hours of the matter being brought to their attention.
The development has drawn praise from local residents, particularly because many social media users had expressed skepticism that any action would be taken. However, authorities moved quickly, demonstrating that consumer complaints can lead to prompt intervention when supported by evidence.
Local corporator Hetal Gala Morvekar visited the outlet along with officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and civic authorities to review the matter.
During the inspection, officials reportedly noted certain deficiencies requiring further examination, including concerns relating to refrigeration standards and product labeling compliance. According to information gathered during the visit, refrigerator temperature maintenance and the absence of certain mandatory food labeling requirements were among the issues observed by officials.
FDA representatives informed this publication that an investigation has been initiated and that the inquiry may extend beyond a single outlet. Officials indicated that inspections and verification processes could be carried out at other Punjabi Paneer stores as part of the ongoing investigation.
The action follows a complaint by senior citizen Harbinder Singh Gujral, who had approached authorities after raising concerns regarding paneer purchased from the Veena Nagar outlet.
Despite the widespread attention the matter received, Gujral said his intention was not to target the business but to ensure accountability and consumer safety.
“I just wanted an apology and acknowledgment that the issue would be taken seriously. My objective was always customer safety and ensuring that corrective action is taken,” Gujral told this publication.
Following the intervention by authorities, the management reportedly issued an apology to the complainant and assured that corrective measures would be implemented.
Residents have welcomed the coordinated response by the FDA, BMC, Mumbai Police, and local elected representatives, noting that action within 24 hours sends a positive message about accountability and responsive governance.
The incident has also challenged a common public perception that complaints often do not result in action. In this case, authorities responded promptly, conducted inspections, and initiated further investigation, earning appreciation from citizens.
Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that any final conclusions or regulatory action will be based on due process and the findings of the inquiry.
For many residents, the episode serves as a reminder that responsible citizens, responsive authorities, and proper regulatory oversight can work together to address concerns involving public health and consumer welfare.
