Following the controversy surrounding the title of their upcoming Netflix drama, Ghooskhor Pandat, both filmmaker Neeraj Pandey and actor Manoj Bajpayee have responded. The announcement of the film sparked significant backlash, with many claiming that the title disparages a specific community. In response, the makers and Netflix decided to remove the promotional content that had been released during its recent slate announcement.
On Friday, Manoj Bajpayee took to social media to address the uproar. He expressed his understanding of the emotions of those offended by the film’s title, emphasizing that his portrayal in the film is meant to reflect the journey of a complex character rather than make a statement about any particular community. He stated, “I respect the emotions and concerns people have shared, and I take them seriously. When something you are part of causes hurt to some people, it makes you pause and listen. As an actor, I come to a film through the character and the story I am playing. For me, this was about portraying a flawed individual and his journey of self-realisation. This was not meant to be a statement about any community.”
Bajpayee also praised Neeraj Pandey for his thoughtful handling of projects, noting, “In my experience of working with Neeraj Pandey, there has been a consistent seriousness and care in how he approaches his films.” He highlighted that the decision to withdraw promotional materials in light of public sentiment reflects their commitment to addressing these concerns seriously.
In a related development, an FIR has been lodged against the film’s director and team at the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow. Various organizations have threatened to protest, alleging that the title Ghooskhor Pandat is derogatory towards the Brahmin community. Neeraj Pandey also shared a post clarifying that the term ‘Pandat’ is intended as a colloquial reference for a fictional character and does not represent any specific caste, religion, or community. He apologized for any distress the title may have caused.
