Actress Shalini Pandey made a remarkable entrance into the film industry with her debut in Arjun Reddy, quickly becoming one of its most promising talents. Recently, she has been involved in various projects, including Dabba Cartel, Rahu Ketu, and Bandwaale. In her role in Bandwaale, she connected deeply with her character, reminiscent of her own struggles to carve a niche in the competitive industry. In an open conversation with mid-day, Shalini discussed her experiences during Arjun Reddy’s success, her relationship with Vijay Deverakonda, the persistent sexism in the industry, and more.
Shalini Pandey on Leaving Home for Acting
Originating from Jabalpur, the Maharaja actress faced numerous challenges in her quest to become an actress. Despite these hurdles, she has always championed the idea of taking risks over settling into comfort. “I’ve always believed in taking risks. Comfort doesn’t foster growth,” she shares.
She continues, stating that she doesn’t dwell on hardships but instead chooses to embrace every experience that comes her way. “I’m rebellious enough to disregard the opinions of others. If I can tune out my father’s concerns, then nothing else matters. Struggles are a part of life. I don’t romanticize suffering or stay fixated on it.”

Upon its release in 2017, Arjun Reddy not only became a box office hit but also revolutionized modern Telugu cinema. Reflecting on her choice to debut with this film, Shalini expresses, “We were genuinely excited about the project. I was thrilled to be on set and fully engrossed in the experience. I never anticipated its monumental success, which was incredibly overwhelming. I wasn’t sure how to handle all that love.”
“All of us were new to the industry, aiming to create something special and honest. We focused on our work without overthinking its potential success,” she adds. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film featured Vijay Deverakonda in the lead role. Recalling her time on set, Shalini reminisces, “We were all eager about the scenes and would discuss them at length. There was a wonderful camaraderie among us, which is evident in the film.” When asked if she still keeps in touch with Vijay and the director, she remarks, “We’ll always wish each other well. I assume that’s true for both sides. Are we best friends? No. Life takes us in different directions, and I’m in a different phase now.”

Following the success of Arjun Reddy, Shalini experienced moments of exclusion from discussions on set and faced typecasting. When asked if sexism persists in the industry, she responds, “That’s always going to be a reality. It’s been around forever. I make it a point to stand up for myself. I never compromise my views for anyone. I express my disagreements in a way that hopefully fosters understanding. However, it’s not my duty to make someone comprehend my perspective.”
Discussing negativity and competitiveness, she observes that attempts to undermine others are universal, not limited to the film industry. “If you’re progressing, others may try to bring you down. It’s an unfortunate aspect of life, but complaining won’t change it.”
She concludes by highlighting that such behavior usually stems from personal insecurities rather than external circumstances. “Accepting that life unfolds this way helps in coping better. Those who attempt to belittle others often do so out of their own insecurities. True security within oneself prevents such actions.”
