In March 2026, a legal battle ignited when Dream Warrior Pictures, the creators of the Tamil film Kaithi, took action against Ajay Devgn Films and Reliance Entertainment, the producers of the Hindi remake Bholaa. They alleged a breach of contract and copyright infringement. Recently, the Bombay High Court confirmed its authority to hear the lawsuit brought by Dream Warrior Pictures.

The court, presided over by Justice Sharmila Deshmukh, declared its jurisdiction to address the claims involving Bholaa, which is a 2023 Hindi remake of the successful Tamil film Kaithi. Reports from Bar and Bench indicate that the court dismissed objections from Bholaa’s producers, who contended that the case should only be heard in Chennai courts. Dream Warrior alleges that payments under the remake agreements remain unpaid, prompting them to seek a halt to Bholaa’s distribution. The next hearing in the Bombay High Court is scheduled for April 30.

Regarding the Bholaa vs. Kaithi controversy, Bholaa, featuring Ajay Devgn, was released on March 30, 2023, with Devgn serving as both producer and director. As the official Hindi adaptation of the 2019 Tamil film Kaithi, which starred Karthi, the dispute arose nearly three years after Bholaa’s release. Dream Warrior Pictures claims it holds exclusive rights to the original film’s copyright and the rights to create remakes, accusing Bholaa’s producers of infringing these rights.

Following Bholaa’s debut, a tripartite agreement was established on April 1, 2023, involving Dream Warrior Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, and Ajay Devgn Ffilms LLP. Dream Warrior alleges that payments due under this agreement, specifically the second and third installments scheduled for April 29 and May 29, 2023, have not been made. The company has reportedly sent multiple reminders throughout 2023 and 2024 but has received no responses from the involved parties.

On October 28, 2024, Dream Warrior Pictures issued a legal notice demanding Rs 4 crore plus interest, warning that failure to remit payment within 30 days would result in the termination of the agreement and a reversion of all rights.
