In light of recent discussions surrounding actress Janhvi Kapoor’s departure from his talent agency, filmmaker Karan Johar has made a thoughtful appeal to media outlets, urging them to prioritize context when quoting interviews.
Karan Johar Addresses Clickbait Culture
Taking to his Instagram stories, Karan highlighted the issue of misleading headlines, emphasizing the importance of context in interviews and podcasts. He noted that artists willingly engage in conversations but cautioned that isolating a single statement can misrepresent their intentions and hinder open dialogue.
“I would like to kindly address the issue of clickbait headlines… Many of us are happy to give interviews and share our thoughts, but taking one line out of context is merely clickbait and makes us hesitant to speak openly,” Karan remarked, without delving too deeply into the specifics of his message.
Describing his message as a “humble request,” the filmmaker called for integrity in how statements are presented, urging against sensationalism that distorts the original meaning.
“This is a humble request to avoid quoting lines that misrepresent the importance of what was said, turning it into something personal, offensive, or sensational,” he concluded.
Karan’s comments come amidst discussions about celebrities transitioning between talent agencies.
Karan Johar on Janhvi’s Agency Change
Recently, Janhvi Kapoor left Dharma Cornerstone Artist Company (DCAA), which Karan Johar oversees, to join Collective Artists Network, reflecting a broader trend of actors frequently changing representation. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Johar acknowledged that today’s actors navigate a landscape heavily influenced by social media, technology, and relentless public scrutiny, which can create anxiety and a craving for quick validation. Unlike previous generations, young stars face daily judgment that can be mentally taxing. While he may not always agree with their career decisions, Karan expressed understanding of the pressures they encounter.
He also shared his reservations about encouraging his own children to pursue acting, given the intense scrutiny that industry newcomers face. Karan noted that even those within the industry start their careers under significant perceptual bias, making it an emotionally taxing profession.
Despite the frequent shifts in talent, he affirmed that talent management remains a robust and lucrative sector for Dharma. He described the entertainment industry as a space of “constant motion,” where artists often switch agencies in search of new beginnings, and some even return. With empathy for younger stars, Johar encouraged those in the limelight to seek therapy and counseling, highlighting the importance of external emotional support beyond family and friends.
