National Award-winning actress Konkona Sen Sharma is garnering acclaim for her role in the newly released streaming film, Accused. In a recent interview with IANS, she emphasized that the film deliberately avoids sensationalism. Accused tells the compelling story of a woman accused of sexually harassing a victim, featuring Konkona Sen Sharma alongside Pratibha Ranta in leading roles.

During the film’s promotional activities, Konkona stated, “Sensationalism is an easy reward. It’s quick and often draws attention, but that’s not our focus. We aim to create a film rich in nuance and depth, steering clear of simplistic answers.”

She elaborated on the film’s themes, saying, “It’s a deep dive into power dynamics and human relationships. How do accusations impact these relationships? How do they evolve or unravel? We also examine our inherent biases, both positive and negative, towards women in power and queer couples, and how these biases shape our judgments. This is a completely different narrative altogether.”

Director Anubhuti Kashyap, known for her previous work in Doctor G (2022), shared her vision for the film. She remarked, “The story called for a specific lens—one that required empathy. We intentionally avoided sensationalizing it. Our goal was to present uncomfortable truths and events central to the plot, focusing on various aspects rather than just the queer relationship.”

Kashyap also noted that the film’s setting in the UK allowed for a more casual portrayal of the central queer relationship. “Had we set it in India, we would have needed to make a statement about it, which we wanted to avoid,” she said.

Accused is now available for streaming on Netflix.
