Priya Kapur, embroiled in a lengthy inheritance battle over the late Sunjay Kapur’s substantial estate valued at Rs 30,000 crore, is facing new challenges as Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has accused her of coercion. Mandhira has also requested the production of specific documents from Priya. Recently, the Patiala High Court responded to Mandhira’s application by issuing a notice.

The Patiala High Court addressed an application put forth by Mandhira Kapur Smith, seeking certain documents from Priya Sachdev Kapur in relation to an ongoing defamation case. Mandhira, the sister of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, appeared in court to provide her response to the defamation claim made by Priya. Alongside her reply, she submitted a request for the production of specific documents from the complainant.

During the proceedings, Priya Kapur’s senior counsel argued that Mandhira’s application lacked validity, as reported by ANI. The court has scheduled further hearings and arguments for March 30. Additionally, the court granted time for Pooja Chaudhary, the proposed accused, to submit her response.

Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, representing Priya Kapur, contended that Mandhira Kapur’s application was not appropriate at this stage of the proceedings. He indicated that he would not file a formal reply but reserved the right to argue legal points.

Mandhira Kapur appeared in court following a notice issued earlier and provided her reply to the defamation complaint filed by Priya. Advocate Amit Prasad, representing Mandhira, submitted the reply along with an application asserting that the allegedly defamatory statements should not be isolated from their context.

Mandhira has called for the production of specific documents and referenced a Supreme Court judgment to support her request. In contrast, Singh opposed the plea for document production, arguing that the case is still at the notice stage and not yet at the charge stage. Therefore, he maintained that the request for document production was premature.

Singh also noted that there has been no denial of the statements made by Mandhira Kapur, asserting that it hasn’t been claimed that the content was altered or fabricated.

In her defamation case against Mandhira, Priya Sachdev Kapur has filed a criminal complaint, alleging that a series of statements made by Mandhira across various platforms, including podcasts and social media, represents a concerted effort to tarnish her reputation.

The complaint claims that these remarks contain falsehoods and personal attacks disguised as facts, causing significant harm to Priya’s reputation, especially since the matters involved are still under judicial review.

The circulated materials are accused of promoting misleading narratives aimed at undermining and harassing Priya Kapur in the public sphere, rather than seeking legal remedies. Amid this backdrop, Mandhira has openly criticized Priya’s actions and intentions in media interactions.
