Rani Mukerji has expressed her insights on the evolving dynamics within the Hindi film industry, a topic recently brought to light by musician AR Rahman. The Oscar-winning artist ignited discussions about potential communal bias in Bollywood. However, Mukerji, who has dedicated nearly three decades to the industry, firmly rejected this notion.

In a recent interview with DD News while promoting her film Mardaani 3, Mukerji emphasized her belief that Bollywood is a secular space. She stated, “I have never faced any form of discrimination. Bollywood is the most secular place, and I genuinely believe that. Throughout my 30 years in the industry, I’ve never encountered anything like this. I cherish this industry—it has shaped who I am today.”

The actress further elaborated on the meritocratic nature of the industry, asserting, “From the depths of my heart, I can say that merit prevails here. Your work ultimately defines you, and the audience’s connection to an artist determines their success. For me, Bollywood is not only secular but one of the most incredible places to be.”

What sparked Rahman’s comments? During a recent chat with BBC Asian Network, Rahman discussed his experiences of receiving limited work opportunities in Bollywood. He remarked, “People lacking creativity now hold decision-making power, and while there could be communal factors involved, it’s not something I’ve directly faced. I often hear through indirect channels that I was considered, but the music company opted for their usual five composers. I thought, ‘That’s fine; I can relax with my family.'”

Rahman’s remarks regarding ‘communal’ bias in the Hindi film industry drew significant backlash, prompting him to apologize via a video message on social media.
