Bollywood sensation Ranveer Singh is currently facing legal scrutiny in the Karnataka High Court concerning the Kantara mimicry incident. Following a previous hearing where he submitted an affidavit of apology, the court has now asked him to refine his statement after the complainant raised concerns about its sincerity. On Friday, the star of ‘Dhurandhar’ expressed his willingness to collaborate with the complainant to enhance the wording of his apology. This came after the complainant argued that the original affidavit did not convey true remorse.
The court was reviewing Singh’s petition aimed at dismissing an FIR linked to the incident at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa last year. During the festival, Singh reportedly mimicked a character portrayed by actor Rishab Shetty and referred to a deity as a ‘female ghost,’ which sparked significant backlash.
Senior advocate Sajan Poovayya, representing Singh, informed Justice M. Nagaprasanna that an apology affidavit had already been submitted, stating the actor’s intention to visit the relevant temple for prayers. However, the complainant’s legal team contended that the affidavit lacked clarity and failed to adequately express remorse, calling for a more precise and clear apology.
Poovayya highlighted portions of the affidavit where Singh indicated he was unaware his actions would offend devotees and expressed regret for the incident. He also noted that Singh had issued an unconditional public apology upon realizing the gravity of his remarks.
The complainant’s counsel insisted on a revised affidavit that more accurately reflects remorse. In response, Poovayya assured the court of his commitment to collaborate with the complainant on a new draft that addresses their concerns. The court subsequently adjourned the matter to April 23, instructing that the revised affidavit be submitted to the complainant’s satisfaction.
In this case, Ranveer Singh faced backlash for referring to a deity as a ‘female ghost’ while enacting a scene of divine possession at IFFI in Goa. The remarks incited outrage, with many social media users accusing the actor of disrespecting religious sentiments. In light of the controversy, Singh had previously issued an apology on Instagram for imitating Rishab Shetty’s performance in ‘Kantara: Chapter 1,’ expressing sincere regret for his actions. Despite this, an FIR was lodged following a complaint made by an advocate.
