The Mumbai Cricket Association as well as the Maharashtra Cricket Association have both taken a serious view of the situation after it was reported that Prithvi Shaw, 25, representing Maharashtra, swung his bat at Mumbai player Musheer Khan, 20, on Day One of their three-day warm-up match at the MCA Stadium in Gahunje on Tuesday.
“There will be a [Mumbai Ranji team] selection committee meeting tomorrow [Thursday], so we will ask them [Mumbai captain, coach and the player] about what happened. We will be getting a report [of this incident] during our selection committee meeting, and [former India captain] Dilip Vengsarkar, who is our Advisor, will speak to them [players],” Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Abhay Hadap told mid-day on Wednesday.
Maharashtra Cricket Association secretary Adv Kamlesh Pisal also emphasised that they will probe this matter. “I’m still awaiting the report [on the incident]. I will be obtaining detailed information [about the incident] and if something is found, depending on the gravity of the situation and considering the importance of discipline, we will speak to both the players [Shaw and Musheer]. Discipline among players is a very important aspect,” Pisal told mid-day.
On Tuesday, after scoring an impressive 181 off 200 balls, Shaw was dismissed by Musheer following which an argument ensued between the duo and the Maharashtra batter, as clearly seen in numerous viral videos, swung his bat at the Mumbai player. Musheer’s Mumbai teammates immediately gathered around the duo before the umpire stepped in to diffuse the situation. It was later learnt that Musheer said ‘Thank You’ to Shaw immediately after his dismissal and this triggered the out-of- favour India batter, who recently took a transfer from Mumbai to Maharashtra and was playing his first game for his new team.
Mumbai begin their Ranji trophy campaign against Jammu & Kashmir at Srinagar on October 15, while Maharashtra kick off their tournament against Kerala on the same day.
