Generations of Indian cinephiles have grown up seeing that iconic RK Films logo before the start of a movie. And it may not be too long before it lights up the screen again. Trade sources reveal that Ranbir Kapoor is working on bringing the banner, which was established by his grandfather and superstar Raj Kapoor, back in action.

Sources say that the actor will build a strong creative line-up before setting up a new space for RK Films in Mumbai. It may be recalled that in May 2019, RK Studios in Chembur was acquired by Godrej Properties. A source reveals, “They’re not rushing to construct a studio just yet. Right now, the priority is to re-establish the brand. Eventually, they will create a space which can have the production house’s office and a screening theatre.”
Ayan Mukerji and Anurag Basu
On his birthday in September, Ranbir expressed his wish to turn director soon. His maiden directorial venture is apparently among the three projects that will be backed by the banner. The others include Ayan Mukerji’s next, which will see the superstar reuniting with his ‘Brahm¯astra: Part One: Shiva’ (2022) director, and director Anurag Basu’s long-awaited Kishore Kumar biopic that is expected to star Aamir Khan. All projects are said to be in advanced discussion. A trade insider adds, “With the banner, Ranbir wants to carry forward the legacy, but with a modern voice. However, it’s yet to become a concrete plan. A lot of factors need to be worked out before this can be a reality.”
