The iconic thriller Baazigar was released on 12 November 1993 and has completed 32 years since its release. Baazigar, helmed by Abbas–Mustan, also starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Shilpa Shetty.
To mark this occasion, actors Shilpa Shetty and Kajol took to Instagram to reminisce about their film.
Shilpa Shetty and Kajol celebrate their film
Actress Shilpa Shetty took a nostalgic trip down memory lane and fondly remembered working alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the film, which continues to hold a special place in her heart.
Taking to her Instagram Stories, Shilpa shared a montage of memorable clips from Baazigar, featuring some of her iconic scenes with Shah Rukh and Kajol. The clip also features snippets from the popular song Kitaben Bahut Si.
Sharing the clip, the Dhadkan actress simply wrote, 32YearsofBaazigar & what a ride it’s been!”
Baazigar marked Shilpa Shetty’s screen debut and earned her the first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
At an event, Shilpa had opened up about the dramatic scene in the film where her character was pushed off a building by Shah Rukh Khan’s character. Speaking on the sidelines of a film festival, the actress had shared, “Akbar Bhai was the action director for the film, and we shot that scene nearly five times. I had a scar on my hip for nearly 8-10 years of my life because I was asked to wear a harness.”
“Back in those times, we did not have any VFX. So, I had to act authentically to show what I was feeling, and the building was moving. But the makers thought that the scene could be shot better,” she shared and remarked in jest, “I have died nearly 15 times.”
On Wednesday, Kajol also took to her Instagram and shared two throwback images of herself and Shah Rukh Khan from the film. She wrote in the caption, “32 years of Baazigar, a story, a chapter, a journey I’ll always cherish”.
The film marked the start of a long and successful collaboration between SRK and Kajol. Their on-screen chemistry in the movie was widely noticed, helping to establish them as one of Bollywood’s most popular pairs.
They went on to star in several major hits, like Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, My Name Is Khan, and Dilwale.
About Baazigar
The film is a loose adaptation of the 1991 Hollywood film A Kiss Before Dying. It follows the story of Ajay Sharma (Shah Rukh Khan), who seeks revenge against wealthy businessman Madan Chopra for ruining his father. Ajay deceives Chopra’s daughters, Seema (Shilpa Shetty) and Priya (Kajol), leading to a series of murders and revelations.
Baazigar was notable for portraying the lead actor as an anti-hero —a significant shift in Hindi cinema at the time —and for playing a key role in establishing Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom.
The film’s music was composed by Anu Malik and included songs like the title track and Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen, which became chartbusters.
It won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Shah Rukh Khan) and Best Screenplay.
The film’s mix of suspense, romance, and moral ambiguity influenced later Bollywood thrillers. The film was a commercial success, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. It is often cited as one of the defining Hindi films of the early 1990s, marking a turning point in both Shah Rukh Khan’s career and the thriller genre in India.
