Notes of nostalgia will dominate the December 12 concert, Yaadon Ki Geetmala — Down Memory Lane, which will be a tribute to late Sunil and Nargis Dutt. To be held at the Nehru Auditorium in Worli, the event will see six singers render evergreen numbers of the two legends.
Priya Dutt, the youngest daughter of the late actors, was surprised when organiser Deepak Kapadia approached her with the idea of dedicating a musical evening to her parents. “Initially I was wary whether the concert would draw in people. I thought to myself that not many would identify with these songs, but the organisers were convinced that they had hit the right notes, and then I was too,” she said with a smile, when we met her at her Bandra office.
Besides taking the audience down memory lane with Sunil and Nargis Dutt’s songs, the event will give them a peek into their lives. Rare photographs of the late superstars will be on display, tracing their journey.
Net proceeds from the evening will go towards the Nargis Dutt Foundation that has been supporting underprivileged cancer patients since its launch in 1981. About leading the foundation over the years, Priya said, “We started working in the education space in 2012, though cancer remains front and centre. My next passion is to start an animal welfare fund.”
Veteran actor Waheeda Rehman, and actor and cancer survivor Manisha Koirala are expected to attend the concert
Programme organiser Kapadia shared that when he conceptualised an event to benefit cancer patients, the Nargis Dutt Foundation immediately came to his mind. “I met Priya Dutt, and gradually we went from an idea to an event. We have a robust response already. People on wheelchairs are asking me if they can attend the concert,” exclaimed Kapadia, while Prashant Rao, who will host the evening, added, “I am a Sunil-Nargis Dutt fan. So, I will weave in anecdotes between songs.”
