Lalit Modi, the former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has voiced his disappointment over Pakistan’s choice to boycott their group-stage match against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He emphasized that when political issues overshadow sporting events, the integrity of cricket is compromised. In an interview with IANS, Modi stated, “Cricket should be determined on the field, not through political maneuvering or boycotts. When politics infiltrates sports, the essence of the game is lost — yet fans will always remember who upheld the spirit of competition.”
Pakistan’s withdrawal, which follows governmental directives, has raised concerns about the broader implications for cricket. The highly anticipated match is set for February 15 in Colombo, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly engaging with stakeholders to assess the repercussions.
Modi warned that the impact could extend beyond this one match, saying, “The broadcast rights for bilateral series and the future of ICC revenues may be scrutinized, as broadcasters might hesitate to invest heavily if this trend continues. The only clear beneficiary in this scenario will be the IPL.”
