Dilip Vengsarkar, the former captain of both Mumbai and India, and current Cricket Advisor for the Mumbai Cricket Association, has voiced his frustration following Mumbai’s elimination by Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals at the MCA-BKC ground on Monday. This defeat marks another season without a trophy for the 42-time Ranji champions. Previously, in December, Mumbai failed to advance from the Super League stage in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy held in Pune, and last month, they lost to Karnataka by 55 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-finals in Bengaluru.

Vengsarkar expressed, “I genuinely believed we were close to clinching the Ranji Trophy for the 43rd time, but it just wasn’t meant to be. When analyzing the reasons for our exit, the first things that come to mind are our lackluster fielding and catching.” Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur echoed this sentiment, attributing the quarter-final loss to crucial dropped catches, particularly one that allowed Karnataka’s KL Rahul to score 130 after being dropped at slip.

“When playing for Mumbai, you must be fully committed to the team. Your dedication and focus should be unwavering, embodying the killer instinct that defines Mumbai’s cricketing legacy. It was particularly disheartening to falter against Karnataka, a strong team. Chasing 325 in the final innings on that pitch was no small feat, but dropping catches severely hindered our chances. If you let those opportunities slip, winning becomes a tall order. One crucial wicket can shift the momentum. Unfortunately, we’ve had a troubling trend of dropped catches throughout this season, and this is something the team management needs to address,” Vengsarkar noted, highlighting his experience as a premier slip fielder in his playing days.

A notable dropped catch occurred when Rahul was on 75 during the second innings on Day 4. He edged Thakur’s delivery to slip, where Yashasvi Jaiswal was positioned, but Siddhesh Lad lunged from the second slip for a one-handed attempt and was unable to secure the catch. At that moment, Karnataka was at 142-3, needing 183 more runs to clinch victory.

When asked if the batting failures contributed to the loss, Vengsarkar acknowledged, “Yes, but the team eventually settled down. Siddhesh played a crucial role in the middle order. It was unfortunate that Sarfaraz Khan missed the last game due to illness; his absence was felt. Ajinkya Rahane’s mid-season withdrawal was also unexpected.”

In terms of recent performance, Mumbai has struggled this season:

– **Ranji Trophy**: Only Siddhesh Lad stood out, scoring 774 runs with five centuries, while Musheer Khan contributed 446 runs. On the bowling front, only Shams Mulani (30 wickets in 7 matches), Tushar Deshpande (25 in 8 matches), and Mohit Avasthi (14 in 4 matches) showed consistency.

– **Vijay Hazare Trophy**: The team lacked a solid winning combination, experimenting with 22 players. Despite featuring top Indian batters like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, frequent changes hampered team cohesion.

– **Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy**: As defending champions, the team relied on individual performances rather than cohesive teamwork, resulting in an early exit at the Super League stage.
