In the T20 World Cup 2026 clash held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, England faced a 30-run defeat to the West Indies. England’s captain, Harry Brook, shared insights on the match, revealing that the team had anticipated better conditions on the pitch which ultimately did not materialize. He noted that the ‘Three Lions’ approached their chase of 197 runs with caution. “We were perhaps a bit too careful. Chasing close to 200 runs is always a daunting task. We expected the pitch to improve and allow for better batting, but that didn’t happen. I admit, I was also a bit cautious,” Brook explained. He further acknowledged that England’s execution with the ball fell short of their usual standards. Despite the setback, he commended the West Indies, calling them a formidable team. “We didn’t quite perform to our potential with the ball, and they likely scored 15 to 20 runs more than we anticipated. We believed the target was achievable, especially with our plans for dew, which didn’t have the expected impact. T20 cricket can be unpredictable, and the West Indies are an exceptionally strong side,” Brook added. Sherfane Rutherford from the West Indies was awarded ‘Player of the Match’ for his explosive innings, scoring 76 runs off just 42 balls, which included two fours and seven sixes. Gudakesh Motie excelled with the ball, taking three wickets for 33 runs in four overs, while Roston Chase claimed two wickets for 29 runs. Akeal Hosein and Romario Shepherd contributed with a wicket each. This victory secured the West Indies the top position in Group C with a net run rate of +1.625 and four points. Upcoming, the West Indies will face Nepal on February 15 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
