In a thrilling encounter at the T20 World Cup 2026, Team India triumphed over their long-standing rivals, Pakistan, by 61 runs at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. Ishan Kishan, opening for India, delivered a stunning performance, scoring 77 runs off just 40 balls, featuring 10 fours and three sixes.

Tilak Varma, who supported Kishan from the other end, contributed 25 runs off 24 balls with two boundaries and one six. Reflecting on Kishan’s exceptional innings, Varma remarked that it seemed as if Kishan was playing on a different pitch. He added that after their impressive start, the duo’s goal was to aim for 200 runs instead of merely settling for 175.

“There was a bit of nervousness in this game, but I concentrated on each ball. The wicket was a bit tricky, yet Ishan’s batting was nothing short of phenomenal. It was a joy to watch. The way he executed his shots made it seem like he was on a different pitch. I encouraged him to keep up that form, assuring him that if a wicket fell, I would manage the strike rotation,” Varma explained.

In the match, Pakistan won the toss and opted to field first. After Abhishek fell for a duck, Indian innings were anchored by Kishan’s 77 and Varma’s 25. However, India found themselves in a precarious position at 126/4, losing crucial wickets, including all-rounder Hardik Pandya for zero.

Fortunately, skipper Suryakumar Yadav, along with Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh, steadied the ship with well-paced innings, leading India to a total of 175/7. Saim Ayub stood out as Pakistan’s top bowler with figures of 3/25.

During the chase, Pakistan’s innings crumbled to 34/4 due to early breakthroughs by Hardik, Jasprit Bumrah, and Axar Patel. Usman Khan fought valiantly, scoring 44 runs off 34 balls, but Pakistan ultimately fell short, bowled out for just 114 runs in 18 overs. Axar Patel was the pick of India’s bowlers with figures of 2/29, alongside Hardik (2/16), Bumrah (2/17), and Varun Chakaravarthy (2/17).

This victory propelled the Men in Blue into the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, marking their third consecutive win. Currently, India leads Group A with six points and a net run rate (NRR) of +3.050.

Upcoming Fixture: Team India, under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, will face the Netherlands on February 18 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
