As Team India gears up to face the Netherlands in the T20 World Cup 2026 on February 18 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, all eyes are on the explosive opener Abhishek Sharma. Despite having faced challenges in his first two matches, where he registered ducks, expectations remain high for a standout performance from him. Team India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, expressed confidence in Sharma’s approach. ‘We have strategies in place, but he was unwell and missed the Namibia game. In the last match, he got out in the very first over. It’s essential to avoid overanalyzing; sometimes we can make more assumptions than the opposition does. Abhishek has his plans in place and is aware of the opposition’s strengths,’ Kotak stated. He emphasized that the T20 format is inherently risky, and fretting over a player’s form can create unnecessary pressure. ‘Before falling ill, Abhishek was scoring runs. In T20s, even a quick 30 off 10 balls can be crucial. Players will inevitably get out, and if we focus too much on this, it adds to their burden. He has a clear mindset and solid plans, which are what truly matter,’ Kotak added. The batting coach further highlighted the importance of adapting game plans based on the situation rather than letting past failures dictate decisions. ‘Playing aggressively is vital, but we shouldn’t alter our approach just because of a couple of setbacks. The strategy should evolve based on conditions and the match situation. For instance, in the Mumbai game, Surya played a more patient role, maintaining a run-a-ball pace for the first 30-35 balls, which was necessary for that scenario,’ the 53-year-old coach explained.
India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 includes: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Sanju Samson (WK), Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishan Kishan (WK), Rinku Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Abhishek Sharma, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, and Tilak Varma.
