Hardik Pandya, India’s star all-rounder, recently reflected on pivotal moments that have defined his cricketing journey. He highlighted the significance of the 2016 T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh, where he successfully defended 11 runs in the final over, propelling him into the limelight. Now, a decade later, he stands as a senior member of the Indian cricket team.

“These experiences have shaped who I am today. Early in my international career, I faced numerous challenges that required me to be resilient and to believe in myself. In cricket, the game isn’t over until the last ball is bowled, even if you only have a 1% chance of winning. That game against Bangladesh exemplified this. Just before the wicket fell, the opposing batsman began celebrating as if victory was assured, right in front of me,” Pandya recounted during an interview with JioStar.

He noted that such moments create lasting memories. “Reflecting on that match reminds me of the hurdles I faced early on, which were instrumental in shaping my career. While I’ve encountered many significant moments since, my journey truly began with that one,” he added.

Pandya also expressed a desire to tap into more of his batting potential, admitting that he believes he has showcased only 40% of his abilities at the crease. “The cricket enthusiast in me was often more focused on my bowling skills. While I’ve always had confidence in my bowling, batting is something I hold dear. After the last IPL season, I realized I wanted to play to my fullest potential. Honestly, I feel I’ve only utilized about 40% of my batting capabilities, and that’s a truthful assessment. What I envision as a cricketer hasn’t yet translated into performance as it should,” the 32-year-old explained.

He credited his rumored girlfriend, Mahieka Sharma, for reigniting his passion for the sport. “I took time to rediscover how to bring out that excitement, and that’s when Mahieka entered my life. We started discussing cricket and how to reconnect with that youthful enthusiasm. She played a crucial role in helping me rediscover my love for the game. I dedicated myself behind the scenes, putting in countless hours of batting practice. There were days I spent six to seven hours on the field. I would arrive at the NCA around 3:30 PM and often leave at 12:30 AM, usually being the last one to turn off the lights,” he shared.

As of now, Pandya is representing Team India in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. The team has played three matches so far, securing victories in all, and has advanced to the “Super 8” stage of the tournament. India is set to wrap up their group stage with a match against the Netherlands on February 18 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
