Renowned Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, joined by 12 other former cricket captains, have voiced their concerns about the health of Imran Khan, the jailed cricketer-turned-politician. They are urging the Pakistani authorities to ensure that Imran receives proper medical care and humane treatment that aligns with international standards.

Reports indicate that Imran, who captained Pakistan to its historic 1992 World Cup victory, has suffered a significant loss of vision—about 85 percent in his right eye—due to alleged medical neglect during his time at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.

In a heartfelt letter addressed to the Pakistan government, the 14 former cricket captains expressed their dismay over Imran’s reported health decline and the conditions of his imprisonment over the past two and a half years. “We, the undersigned former captains of our national cricket teams, write with deep concern regarding the reported treatment and incarceration conditions of Imran Khan, the distinguished former Captain of Pakistan and a legendary figure in world cricket,” the letter states.

The letter further emphasizes the values of fair play, honor, and respect inherent in the sport, asserting that someone of Imran’s stature deserves dignity and humane treatment befitting a former national leader and global sports icon.

The letter is endorsed by notable figures such as Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh, and John Wright. Earlier in 2023, Imran Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison on corruption charges.

The signatories respectfully urged the Government of Pakistan to provide Imran with immediate and continuous medical attention from qualified specialists of his choice to address his health issues, humane detention conditions in accordance with international standards, opportunities for regular family visits, and fair access to legal processes without undue delay.

“Cricket has always served as a bridge between nations,” the letter notes. “Our shared history on the field reminds us that rivalry ends when the stumps are drawn, and respect lingers. Imran Khan embodied that spirit throughout his career. This appeal is made in the spirit of sportsmanship and common humanity, without prejudice to any legal proceedings.”

Additionally, the letter highlights Imran’s immense contributions to cricket, noting that his leadership and sportsmanship have inspired countless individuals across borders. “Imran Khan’s impact on the game is universally acknowledged. He led Pakistan to its first-ever World Cup victory in 1992, a feat that showcased his skill, resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship—qualities that continue to inspire generations. Many of us competed against him, shared the field with him, or grew up admiring his all-round brilliance, charisma, and competitive spirit. He is celebrated as one of the finest all-rounders and captains in the history of the sport, earning respect from players, fans, and administrators alike. Beyond cricket, Imran served as Prime Minister of Pakistan, leading during tumultuous times. Regardless of differing political views, he is honored to have been democratically elected to the highest office in his country,” the letter concludes.
