In an impressive display at the T20 World Cup 2026, West Indies triumphed over Zimbabwe by a commanding 107 runs during the Super 8 match held at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Shimron Hetmyer was the standout performer, smashing a phenomenal 85 runs off just 34 balls, including seven boundaries and an equal number of sixes.
In an interview with JioHotstar, Hetmyer expressed how much the team has grown closer, which has positively impacted their performance. He noted, “The camaraderie among the team members has significantly improved. Earlier, some players hesitated to voice their thoughts, but now we challenge each other, both in practice and on our way to the stadium, which helps us all elevate our game.”
Hetmyer also opened up about his approach while batting. The 29-year-old cricketer emphasized the importance of putting pressure on bowlers. “Once I’m in my zone, I give it my all. If it pays off, fantastic! If not, I keep at it. I concentrate on executing my shots rather than stressing over field placements. My goal is to make solid contact with the ball, and since the wickets are good and the boundaries aren’t overly large, even a half-decent connection can lead to runs. By applying pressure on the bowler, I create more scoring opportunities, rather than just settling for singles. It’s essential to maintain the same mindset throughout. If it’s your day, you’ll shine. If not, just keep pushing forward,” Hetmyer explained.
This victory places the West Indies at the top of Group 1 in the Super 8 stage, securing two points with a net run rate of +5.350. Their upcoming challenge is against South Africa on February 26 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, followed by a clash with Team India on March 1 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. The team, led by Shai Hope, will be counting on strong performances from both Brandon King and Hetmyer in the remaining fixtures of the Super 8 stage.
West Indies’ Squad for T20 World Cup 2026 includes: Jason Holder, Johnson Charles (WK), Akeal Hosein, Roston Chase, Shai Hope (C) (WK), Gudakesh Motie, Brandon King, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovaman Powell, Romario Shepherd, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Matthew Forde, Quentin Sampson, Shamar Joseph.
