In an impressive display during the Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2026, the West Indies triumphed over Zimbabwe by a staggering 107 runs at Wankhede Stadium. Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble praised the team for showcasing their understanding of what it takes to clinch the title. He specifically highlighted the exceptional performance of spinners Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein.

“The West Indies know how to win at this critical stage of the tournament. The left-arm spinners were remarkable. Gudakesh Motie delivered an outstanding performance. In T20, finger spinners often avoid the batter’s hitting zone, but Motie and Hosein took a different approach,” Kumble remarked.

Motie concluded his spell with four wickets for 28 runs in four overs, while Hosein claimed three wickets, also conceding 28 runs in four overs.

The batting prowess of Shimron Hetmyer was on full display, as he smashed 85 runs from just 34 balls, featuring seven fours and an equal number of sixes. Reflecting on Hetmyer’s explosive innings, Kumble noted, “He knows how to clear the boundaries and strives to transform his starts into significant scores. He’s not one to settle for quick 20s or 30s; he aims for larger totals. Had he gotten out at 30, West Indies might not have reached 254, and Zimbabwe could have found a way back into the game.”

Kumble also addressed India’s defeat against South Africa, emphasizing that the Suryakumar Yadav-led team must focus on winning their next two matches. “Every game is crucial at this juncture. India faced a hefty defeat against South Africa, and it’s not just about the loss but how it happened. The pressing question is whether they can rebound against Zimbabwe. India needs to secure victories, similar to the West Indies’ performance, to enhance their net run-rate. After that, they must also beat the West Indies. Winning both matches should be the primary aim; the net run-rate will take care of itself if they dominate the games,” he stated.

As for the upcoming clash, the “Men in Blue” will face Zimbabwe on February 26 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, following their loss to South Africa. All eyes will be on explosive opener Abhishek Sharma to see if he can deliver a crucial performance. Team India must win their remaining two Super 8 matches by substantial margins to keep their title defense alive.
