As Team India gears up to face Zimbabwe in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled for February 26 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, there’s a pressing need for a decisive victory. While improving their net run rate (NRR) is crucial in this tournament, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan emphasizes that winning should be the primary focus. He remarked, “I sincerely hope that the mindset of playing for net run-rate doesn’t surface at the beginning. The main goal should be to win the match. After securing that win, they can then think about run-rate improvement.” Pathan cautioned against fixating on the NRR, especially in relation to teams like the West Indies, stating that achieving a substantial win margin against Zimbabwe and the West Indies is a tall order in T20 cricket. He stressed, “When facing these next matches, the Indian team must concentrate solely on securing the win first.” Furthermore, Pathan suggested that Suryakumar Yadav should bat at number three, providing insight into his reasoning. “Surya can certainly handle the number three spot. Given the conservative strategy, especially with Abhishek’s early dismissals and Ishan Kishan’s first-over exit in the last game, it’s understandable to protect Suryakumar. He shines in the middle overs with a strike rate of 160. Exposing him too early against a new ball could be risky. However, it’s worth considering moving him to number three to break the sequence of three left-handers at the top,” he explained.
