As Team India prepares to face off against Zimbabwe in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, the spotlight is on wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav’s potential inclusion in the lineup. This exciting match is set to unfold at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
When queried about Kuldeep’s chances of playing, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak expressed the challenge posed by the current team composition, noting, “In a T20 format, having batting depth is crucial. If you’re considering a spinner at number eight, you’ll likely lean towards an all-rounder. With seven batsmen in the squad, teams often prefer having a player at number eight who can chip in with 30-40 runs when needed.”
Kotak highlighted the necessity of balance in the squad, emphasizing that only 11 players can take the field. “When you’re on these pitches, chasing a score of 200-220, having an all-rounder can make a difference, especially if you find yourself at 150-6. They can play crucial innings to secure a win. It’s feasible to have two wrist spinners, as seen with (Mohammed) Siraj’s effective bowling too. Ultimately, the focus is on assembling the best possible XI, taking into account the team’s requirements,” he added.
Kuldeep Yadav boasts an impressive record, having claimed 95 wickets in 54 matches at an average of 13.74, with an economy rate of 6.95, including three four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls, with his best performance being five wickets for just 17 runs.
