In the IPL 2026 clash with the Rajasthan Royals (RR), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) found themselves in dire straits, scoring only 70 runs while losing six wickets after just 10 overs. After winning the toss, Rajasthan opted to bowl first, and their pacer Nandre Burger made an immediate impact, taking two wickets for just 14 runs in two overs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson was bowled out cheaply for six runs, managing only one boundary in his seven-ball stint.

CSK’s captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also fell for six runs, hitting one boundary in his 11 balls at the crease. Young talent Ayush Mhatre faced just one delivery before being dismissed for a duck. Matt Short and Impact Player Sarfaraz Khan contributed a mere two and 17 runs, respectively. Short’s innings spanned seven balls, while Sarfaraz faced 12 deliveries, hitting two fours and a six before his dismissal. Kartik Sharma added 18 runs off 15 balls, including a boundary, before he too was sent back.

Shivam Dube also struggled, scoring six runs off four balls with a solitary boundary. Currently, Jamie Overton and Noor Ahmad remain unbeaten at the crease. Alongside Burger’s exploits, Ravindra Jadeja also shone with the ball, claiming two wickets and conceding just 14 runs in two overs. Star bowler Jofra Archer added one wicket for 11 runs over two overs, while Sandeep Sharma chipped in with another wicket, giving away only five runs in his single over. Brijesh Sharma and Ravi Bishnoi are still hunting for their first wickets.

Before the match, RR’s captain Riyan Parag explained his bowling-first strategy, citing the recent rain that left the pitch slightly moist. “We want to take advantage of that early on and see how we can control the game later,” he shared. Parag, who has been with the franchise for eight years, expressed his excitement about leading the team, stating, “It feels overwhelming, and the support from my peers has been incredible. Our goal is to win the championship, and we’ve assembled a squad of smart cricketers and all-rounders who can adapt to various conditions.”

CSK’s skipper Gaikwad echoed the sentiment about the conditions, stating, “Bowling first was a no-brainer. We aim to start positively, hoping our strategies from the auction pay off. Our overseas contingent includes Short, Overton, Noor, and Matt Henry.”
