Actor Imran Khan, who recently made a significant comeback in the industry with ‘Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos,’ opened up about the competitive landscape of Bollywood. He expressed his belief that cinema shouldn’t be seen as a competitive arena.
During a candid conversation on ‘The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra’ Season 3, produced by Gautam Thakker Films, Imran reflected on the constant comparisons actors face, particularly during his early career, including with Ranbir Kapoor.
Imran stated, “I have never subscribed to the idea of creative competition. Reducing cinema to a competitive sport does a disservice to the art we create.” He continued, “People may resonate with a film differently—some will connect emotionally, while others won’t. That’s perfectly acceptable. However, I’ve never measured success by numbers or comparisons.”
With his thoughtful perspective, Imran’s insights provide a refreshing stance on individuality and success in an industry often dominated by comparisons and box office discussions.
Did Imran Khan throw shade at Ranbir Kapoor? In a recent Reddit AMA, a fan urged him, “Please don’t shift to the macho roles that are trending now.” Imran responded, “Yeah, I have no interest in playing a hairy, angry man covered in blood. That genre is already well-represented.”
While he didn’t mention any names, many online speculated that his comment was aimed at actors who are leaning into hyper-masculine roles, such as Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor in projects like ‘Dhurandhar’ and ‘Animal.’
Another fan asked him about his thoughts on the current trend where many mainstream Bollywood heroes depict loud and aggressive characters, often glorifying violence. Imran replied, “I’ve noticed this shift and find it troubling how these films normalize violent outbursts from emotionally immature men, who struggle to accept rejection from women. There’s a vital distinction between depicting violence and endorsing it. I see many chasing trends without thought. My values wouldn’t allow me to engage in a narrative I deem irresponsible.”
