In a nail-biting encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, the Gujarat Titans edged past the Delhi Capitals by just one run. The Titans, seemingly staring defeat in the face, clinched victory with the final ball of the innings.
Chasing a daunting target of 211, KL Rahul played a stellar innings, scoring 92 runs and giving Delhi a fighting chance. However, after his dismissal, David Miller’s blistering 41 off 20 balls brought the Capitals close to victory, only to see their hopes dashed in the final moments.
With just two runs needed from the last two balls, a dot ball followed by a run-out left the Delhi team devastated. Reflecting on the loss, Axar Patel expressed pride in his team despite the disappointment.
“Absolutely, the way both teams played was commendable. In such a tight match, you can always find aspects to improve. I believe we played well, but we could’ve made smarter decisions during the chase. The timing of our wickets falling was crucial; had that not happened, we might have completed the chase sooner. KL Rahul’s innings was outstanding. He maintained momentum even when wickets were falling, ensuring the run-rate didn’t dip too low. Overall, we’re playing good cricket and are determined to secure a win in our next match,” Patel stated.
On the winning side, Shubman Gill expressed his joy over achieving their first victory of the season. The Indian opener, who played a pivotal role with the bat, admitted to feeling nerves as the match edged closer to the end.
“Every game we’ve played has gone down to the wire, so I’m thrilled we managed to pull this one off. When David didn’t take the run off the fifth ball, we knew we had a chance. In the final ball, we debated whether to bowl a yorker or a slower ball, ultimately opting for the latter, which proved effective. Fielding errors, like the overthrows I committed, can make a significant difference in close matches like this. We believed that scoring 210 put us 10-15 runs above par on this pitch. It’s not easy hitting boundaries here, so we focused on our bowling to secure the win. Now, I just need to rest and see how I feel tomorrow,” Gill shared.
