As the IPL season captured the nation’s attention, a small cricket ground in Mumbai became the stage for a different kind of triumph. At the Air India Colony Ground, a group of specially abled children from the Akshay Charitable Trust took to the field, engaging in a friendly match against beloved television stars that redefined what it means to be a star.
Every boundary hit sparked a wave of cheers, and each wicket taken was met with contagious enthusiasm. For these incredible kids, the match served as a vibrant escape from the daily physical and systemic challenges they navigate. When the final ball was bowled, the children had achieved a remarkable victory, illustrating that ‘disability’ is merely a label, not a limitation.
Hardik More, their dedicated sports coach, expressed pride in their talents, emphasizing that these children consistently excel in various sports despite their challenges. “We ensure these kids have fun while playing sports. Many enjoy badminton, lawn tennis, football, and cricket. Their passion for the game inspires us to strive harder for them. Sports are a great equalizer, and despite their physical and mental hurdles, these kids motivate us to improve,” he stated.
As the players showcased their skills on the field, their teachers watched from the sidelines, beaming with pride. Archana More, who has worked with these children for over four years, could hardly contain her joy. “Seeing our students play alongside TV stars is truly rewarding. Many of these kids come from challenging backgrounds, but we strive to provide them with as much exposure as possible. Watching them celebrate under the lights reminds us that although their lives are tough, their spirits remain unbreakable,” she shared.
While their daily lives may seem limited, their teachers and coaches strive to create a sense of normalcy. The children often participate in birthday celebrations and demonstrate their musical talents with instruments like the guitar, piano, and drums.
Akshay Ambekar, the founder of Akshay Charitable Trust, emphasized the importance of treating disabled children just like everyone else. He noted that every specially abled child possesses a unique talent, and it’s the responsibility of their parents to nurture and encourage it.
As the TV stars formed a guard of honour for the children, the score became secondary. The true victory was the powerful message conveyed to the audience: while a disability might affect how a child plays, it does not diminish their right to triumph.
Organized by S4UA, the event was a tremendous success. With the final score fading into the background, the significant takeaway was clear: a disability may alter how a child engages with the game, but it never takes away their right to succeed.
