In the second match of the IPL, the Mumbai Indians triumphed in the toss against the Kolkata Knight Riders and chose to bowl first. This thrilling encounter is set to unfold at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Hardik Pandya announced the return of Jasprit Bumrah to the lineup. The hosts are also welcoming debutants Shardul Thakur, Allah Ghazanfar, and Sherfane Rutherford. Meanwhile, Mitch Santner and Will Jacks are yet to join the Mumbai Indians camp.
Pandya expressed his thoughts, saying, “We have decided to bowl first. The pitch looks promising and is greener than usual. We’ll see how it performs. This is our fortress; the crowd’s energy is with us, and we aim to deliver a strong performance. We’ve been training for a couple of weeks, blending experience with youthful enthusiasm. With players like Rohit, Surya, and Mitchell Santner, we have plenty of leaders in our ranks; I’m eager to get out there and show what we can do. We’re fielding 6 bowlers and 5 batters.”
In response, Ajinkya Rahane confirmed KKR’s overseas players for this crucial match, which include Finn Allen, Cameron Green, Sunil Narine, and Blessing Muzarabani. The KKR skipper mentioned they were also inclined to bowl first.
Rahane noted, “We were looking to bowl as well; I’ve never seen so much grass at Wankhede before. Our preparations have been solid with training camps in both Kolkata and Mumbai. We recognize MI as a champion team and are excited to face them. We must stay focused on the present and not dwell on the past. Despite a couple of injuries, our lineup consists of 6 batters and 5 bowlers, featuring our four overseas players.”
Historically, this rivalry has leaned heavily in favor of the Mumbai Indians, who have won 23 out of 34 encounters against KKR, with the Knight Riders managing to secure 11 victories. At the Wankhede Stadium, MI has an impressive record, winning 10 of their last 11 meetings there. However, it’s worth noting that the Mumbai Indians have not won their opening match of the season since 2013.
