As the Billie Jean King Cup Group 1-Asia/Oceania round-robin approaches, the Indian women’s tennis team has kicked off a five-day training camp at the DLTA Stadium in New Delhi. Their primary objective is to secure a spot in the prestigious World Group for the third time.
The Indian squad features talented players Ankita Raina, Sahaja Yamalapalli, Vaishnavi Adkar, Shrivalli Bhamidipati, Rutuja Bhoosale, and Vaidehee Chaudhari. This intensive camp will run from April 1 to April 5, setting the stage for their upcoming matches.
In a recent statement, Sahaja Yamalapalli expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m really excited to be part of this. We have a strong team again this year, and I’m looking forward to getting started. Playing at home is always special—last year we were in Pune, and now Delhi is hosting the Billie Jean King Cup. The energy and support from the crowd will be amazing.”
Rutuja Bhoosale also shared her excitement: “Everyone’s super excited—this is one of the few weeks in the year when all the girls come together, making it a special time for me too. The camp helps us adjust to the conditions, as we usually play individually throughout the year.”
The Indian team aims to build on their success from last year, where they triumphed over Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and the Republic of Korea in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia & Oceania Group I Qualifiers. With New Zealand, Indonesia, and Mongolia also in the mix, India is determined to secure a top-two finish to keep their World Group aspirations alive.
As they prepare for this pivotal tournament, the team’s focus remains on performance and making a significant push to return to the World Group, turning their impressive previous results into a historic campaign enhanced by the support of their home crowd.
