Following the match, MI’s head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, candidly acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, stating they fell short in executing their game plan. “We weren’t good enough today, and that’s an area we need to improve. We had strategies in place, but unfortunately, they didn’t come to fruition. The opposition batted exceptionally well, especially after the rain disruption, which gave them the freedom to play aggressively. It was crucial for us to perform well in the initial overs, but we missed our lengths and lines, allowing them to capitalize,” he remarked. During the match, RR’s explosive opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set the tone. Sooryavanshi dazzled with a quick-fire 39 runs off just 14 balls, including one boundary and five sixes, while Jaiswal anchored the innings with an impressive unbeaten 77 runs from 32 balls, featuring ten boundaries and four sixes. Commenting on Sooryavanshi, Jayawardene expressed curiosity about the left-handed batsman’s development, noting how he effectively challenged MI’s bowlers. “We recognized his potential last season, and while we managed to contain him previously, every match presents a new challenge. Bumrah slightly missed his length today, and Sooryavanshi was ready to pounce. It will be intriguing to see how he progresses. He truly took our bowlers apart,” Jayawardene stated.
